Masdevallia strobelii

Masdevallia strobelii is small species from Ecuador in the section Saltatrices, with the typical hair-lined tubular flowers of that section.  It is intensely fragrant, blooms prolifically, has brightly colored flowers and is easy to grow, everything that could be asked.  Mine is grown in a plastic net pot in live sphagnum.

Masdevallia constricta 'Kailyn'

Masdevallia constricta with its tubular flowers belongs to the Saltatrices group of Masdevallias and is a spectacular species with flowers that are larger than the plant.  The flowers are 13 cm from tip to tip and are lined with glandular hairs.  This plant has flowers that are somewhat larger than normal and has been awarded by the American Orchid Society.  The species is from Ecuador.

Three Orange Saltatrices Masdevallias

None of these plants had a lot of flowers and since they are all from the same group and the same color I thought I'd do them in one post.  The species in the Saltatrices groupof Masdevallias have tubular flowers, bright colors, glandular hairs lining the inside of the flower and a distinct bulge at the bast of the flower tube.  The photos of the three shown here display these features.  The three species in order are Masdevallia glomerosa, a species I've not posted before, Masdevallia mendozae, and Masdevallia hirtzii, all from Ecuador.  All three are small, the plants growing to about 10 cm with 3-4 cm flowers.

Masdevallia angulifera 'J & L' AM/AOS

Masdevallia angulifera is from Colombia and belongs to the Saltarices group of Masdevallias.  It has all the features of that group, colorful, tubular flowers lined with glandular hairs and a bulge at the base of the tube.  Like the other plants in the group it is small, 12 cm, with 2.5 cm flowers.  This clone is particularly dark and has been awarded by the American Orchid Society.

Masdevallia mystica

Masdevallia mystica belongs to the Saltatrices group of Masdevallias.  The species in this group have bright colors, tubular flowers and "bellies," a noticeable bulge at the base of the flower.  This "species" is from Ecuador, but is probably a natural hybrid of Masdevallia filaria and Masdevallia ventricularia, two other species in this group.  The plant is 10 cm tall and the flowers are surprisingly small, only a little over 2 cm.

Masdevallia constricta 'Kailyn'

As is evident from the photos, Masdevallia constricta has huge flowers that dwarf the plant.  The flowers are 13 cm from tip to tip on a plant that is about the same size.  The species is from Ecuador and belong to the Saltatrices group of Masdevallias.  The species name refers to the "constricted" sepaline tube which is covered on the inside with tiny glandular hairs.  This plant was awarded by the American Orchid Society several years ago.

Masdevallia hirtzii

This wonderful species is from Ecuador and Peru and belong to the Saltatrices group of Masdevallias.  It is typical of the species in that group with brightly colored, tubular flowers that are lined with glandular hairs, and a pronounced swelling at the base of the flower, a "belly."  The plant is 6-8 cm tall with 5 cm flowers and blooms for three or four months, though the individual flowers do not last that long.

Masdevallia mendozae

Masdevallia mendozae is a cool-growing species from the highlands of Ecuador.  It is one of the species in section Saltatrices, a group of species with brightly colored tubular flowers that are lined with glandular hairs, visible in these pictures.  It is somewhat difficult to grow, at least in my experience.  I had a large plant that seemed to be gradually dying off but which has now started to come back and I do not know what caused the decline or why it has started to recover.
